RAIN WATER HARVESTING - STORAGE AND CONSERVATION
PROSPERITY TO VILLAGES

The Soybean Processors Association of India, CPERD and Zila Panchayat, Indore jointly organized a two day workshop on water recharging and conservation at SOPA Centre, Indore on 18th & 19th December 2001. Shri Rajendra Singh of Tarun Bharat Sangh and Magsaysay award winner was the speaker at this occasion.

At this seminar SOPA realized the importance of water harvesting and took up the challenge and started working on how to start this activity and what type of work SOPA can do at low cost. After studying different type of structures and techniques SOPA found that "BORI BANDHAN" is the ideal solution for water harvesting. SOPA also sponsored two agri-extension supervisors to a six-day water harvesting & management workshop at MANAGE, Hyderabad.

The programme is spearheaded under the guidance of Mr. G.T. Bhimte, Retd. Superintendent Engineer - Water Resources Department and Hon. Advisor, SOPA along with SOPA's SDP Staff.

SOPA field workers started contacting villagers and constructed 110 Bori Bandhan structures in drains and nallahs existing in 23 villages in and around Indore with the help of villagers under "FOOD FOR WORK" programme around Indore up to first week of June 2002 for which only Technique and empty HDPE Bage was provided by SOPA.

During the last week of August and first week of September 2002 SOPA conducted a survey and found that out of 110 Bori Bandhan only 10 Bandhan completely damaged due to heavy rains, 13 Bandhan slightly damaged and rest 87 Bandh harvested rain water successfully.

With this success this year again SOPA team is working on "BORI BANDHAN" in number of villages around Indore.
